We are in the final phase of our renovation project for the building (and no, we don’t know yet when the dog statue is returning)

Once upon a time, Federated Charities turned 110 years old…
By Elin
And we all lived happily ever after.
It has been an amazing tale filled with adventure, heroes, villains, sword fights, treasure…and one black dog. This week is our birthday and we don’t dwell too much on the passing of years but we are going to celebrate with a little bit of cake, a few candles and some of our favorite friends and partners.
This is also the time of year when we wish YOU a happy birthday because you are part of our celebration and our work. Our ability to support the community safety net for all these years is only as strong as the community itself. Frederick has supported our activities and this is our happy space.
We hope that you are celebrating a great year yourself. Our building is open to you (wear a mask) and we would love to show you everything that we have to offer.
Feet of Clay, Really – Chapter 4
By Elin
The last time we visited Charity, a tree fell down in the road on our way back out. We had to drive back to the studio, grab a chainsaw and clear the road before we could make it back to the office…it’s never a dull moment and this restoration has been full of not-dull moments. But it was also fascinating to visit the artist’s studio where his legs and paws are being molded for casting. We’ve been promised an extra set so you’ll be able to see them on display in our building when the entire process is complete.

Charity As An Artistic Muse – Chapter 3
By Elin
All great artists have a muse and while we don’t know the name of the artisan who made Charity, we do know that Charity himself is a muse for many artists who document our community. This spring we invited a new generation of artists to make their contribution to our collection and our winner’s piece is the banner you now see hanging in Charity’s place in front of our building…because charity never really goes away, does it?
You can help support the restoration of our original art piece by texting CHARITYDOG to 41444 and making a tax-deductible contribution to “save the dog.” Thank you.
#lookback
By Elin
Federated Charities decided to make some changes. We knew it was going to take some work, a different perspective and possibly some new people. So we did it and because of what we learned about ourselves, we are a much more focused organization. We’d like to celebrate our recent inclusion in the 20/21 Catalogue for Philanthropy with a #lookback at the people who have made the strategic decisions, put in the sweat equity and know exactly what’s behind the dog. Join us in the month of November on social media as we share some of the lessons learned and give you a look at what’s behind the dog. Thanks for standing by us.
Charity Goes To the Vet – Chapter 2
By Elin
Every great project has equally great people associated with it and Charity’s restoration isn’t any different. The restoration is being led by Wellman Conservation and local artist Toby Mendez will be working on recasting the paws. We’re going to let you in on a little secret, Charity isn’t made out of iron, he’s made out of zinc and pewter which was a common home statuary material in the late 19th century. There are very few artisans who still work in zinc so our conservation expert Howard has reached out to the Smithsonian for advice. We guess we’re just traveling in those circles now!-)
